About the project
We created E.ON’s SmartHome app to make intelligent home automation intuitive and accessible, supporting both E.ON’s devices and a variety of third-party products. Our goal was to understand user habits and provide smart automation suggestions, combining proactive guidance with full user control.
The Challenge
Designing a smart home app that adapts to every lifestyle was no easy task. We had to create a system that offered personalized recommendations while still remaining flexible. The interface needed to feel supportive and seamless, catering to both tech-savvy users and those new to home automation.

My role
As UI/UX Lead, I was responsible for:
• Running ideation workshops and defining the app’s core features.
• Creating user journeys, wireframes, and prototypes.
• Prototyping and conducting usability testing to validate design decisions.
• Interface Design, Motion Design and Developer handoff.
• Building a comprehensive design system for Android and iOS.
• Collaborating closely with developers, product owners, and stakeholders to ensure alignment across all phases.
Process
We kicked things off with workshops to define common smart home routines and user pain points. From there, we mapped user journeys, identifying touchpoints where automation could genuinely add value. Through iterative prototyping and user feedback rounds, we refined interaction patterns, UI flows, and visual language to achieve the right balance between guidance and flexibility.
I designed the UI to be approachable and modern, making complex interactions feel simple and intuitive. To streamline collaboration between designers and to ensure consistency, I also built a design system along with design and motion guidelines.
Throughout the process, I closely collaborated with the Android and iOS development teams to ensure feasibility and accurate implementation.
Key UX Highlights
• Guided onboarding flow to help users set up their home and devices with ease.
• Smart automation suggestions based on user behavior and usage patterns.
• Flexible customization of automations and device control to fit diverse lifestyles.
• Sustainability-focused features, like energy-saving recommendations.
• Approachable, modern UI that made complex tasks feel simple and intuitive.
• Clear visual hierarchy, making navigation simple and user-friendly.
• Applied Motion design to guide users and provide clear feedback.

Outcome
While the app wasn’t released due to a change in company strategy, the project itself was a success from a design perspective. We created a fully thought-through product experience that tackled real user needs and translated them into intuitive flows and engaging interfaces. Highlights included:
• Strong team collaboration that made the process enjoyable and efficient.
• Consistent cross-platform design for Android and iOS.
• A user interface that balanced helpful automation suggestions with full flexibility.
• Smooth, animated transitions and interactions to guide users through the app.
• User flows designed around real-world smart home routines and behaviors.
• Clear prioritization of device control, scene creation, and automation management.
